Carroll College changing names to Carroll University

Effective July 1st, 2008 Carroll College will be renamed Carroll University. The name change was a result of the May 2008 board meeting. Discussions have occurred since September 2007 with mailings and e-mailing going out to all current students, faculty, staff, alumni, and donors to post the question if Carroll should change their name or not. There were some mixed feelings among the community primary with those who spent a number of years with Carroll having a sentimental about the name. The discussions began shortly after the change in presidency of Carroll in 2007.

Brace for Taxes!

On Wednesday night the Waukesha school board will be looking at organizing a referendum to increase taxes to beef up their pocket books.  Waukesha School District employee benefits are the root cause for the need.  In my opinion teachers are public servants and should be paid as such, yet competitively based on performance.  The Union (evil word) has made them compensated more than they are worth in their benefit package.  Wisconsin is 14th highest in cost per student, due to teacher compensation.

I urge you to show up and tell them to normalize teacher benefits before taking more of our money.  Check out the article on the front page of the Freeman.

My information comes both from hearing of the very cheap co-pay (something like $5 for $100’s worth of medicine) for prescription drugs with the teachers health coverage, and the information from the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance below:

164 Sidewalk again

I’d just like to add a few things about the sidewalk issue, as someone seems upset over my position.  There was a ridiculous amount of opposition to it from the community (voters) at the common council meeting.  There was not one citizen who expressed they were in favor of it nor addressed any of the concerns over why it was not wanted (excluding those 5 council members who voted for it without comment.)  I listened to those who showed up who live by the sidewalk who do not want it and was moved, if it was really to be wanted then I expect some people who live there would show up to support it.  It was also expressed that the housing nearby is mainly made up of young families.  I did not grew up in a city but I’ve noticed that young kids do what they want, when they get together they’ll walk where they want.  It has been very evident that Generation X parents have a more laxed control over giving them rules like ”don’t use that one sidewalk.”  Other similar sidewalks are not around this type of atmosphere, one is primarilly used by bussed in sales workers and customers at the shopping centers, like in Brookfield on Hwy 18.  Because another municipality chooses to do this also does not tell me it is right to do it here.  Brookfield and Milwaukee are very different from Waukesha, we do not have to be cookie cutter.  If there were supporters I’d expect they would have shown up and spoke as I am sure they knew many families were getting together to speak on it if they were aware of local feelings.  This item was on the agenda for the council meeting for some time.  Those council members who voted against this controversial item were representing their constituents.

Get a cheap bike!

On the 17th of this month the City of Waukesha at the police garage (must be the big garage to the rear of the police station) will be auctioning off over 100 bicycles from storage.  Doors open at 8:30AM, auction starts at 9:00AM.  These are bikes that were recovered from thieves or left somewhere in the city and never claimed.  I myself plan on picking up a couple bikes, My Wife and I do not have a bike between the two of us and the last time I had a bike was when I was in college.  I’d use that old worn out huffy to get to and from classes/labs from my college house.

Foolish 164 sidewalk/ Fleetfoot drive

I was at the common council meeting last night and around 6 or 8 people spoke before the council and mayor about a proposed expansion of the sidewalk along 164.  The existing sidewalk apparently doesn’t go anywhere and is only 5 feet from the 6 lane divided highway.  If the city expands it the way they want to it will apparently be usable to get to some new gas station and other shops for kids and grownups (they seemed most concerned about the kids.)  There is currently a completely useful alternative a few steps away on Fleetfoot Drive, this was mentioned over and over by several of the residents and several council members.  Not being from the area I’m a bit confused where they mean it to be useful to go to, I think perhaps they are talking about getting to Sunset from nearby housing.

I took a look myself (with google streetview) and low and behold you can see a sidewalk all the way from Fleetfoot and 164 go north up towards Racine ave and just END before the intersection.  Sounds like the job of a big moron, there isn’t anything at all to get to on the whole stretch of the sidewalk.  This sidewalk apparently gets plowed all winter, for nobody to use it.  A Plow has apparently also damaged something to show evidence that it would have killed a person if they were walking on the sidewalk at the time.  Now they want to extend it to Racine in the future.  I would never allow a child to walk this route as well, if they fell down or ran off the side of the sidewalk they could be inches from speeding vehicles going 50-60 miles and hour.

I was very disappointed in my Alderman Payne voting for it.  They should be talking about removing the existing sidewalk rather than expanding it, it is frivolous spending and unsafe.  He didn’t represent my feelings nor contribute to much from what I saw this meeting.  I may have to consider running against him next time around witnessing this.  In the end the sidewalk expansion being pre-graded and money put aside for it it lost, 10-against 5-for.  There was quite a bit of discussion over the sidewalk with a lot of emotion and I was happy to see children’s safety a priority to some people.  It was nice to also not see future wasted tax dollars to plow and salt an expansion of the sidewalk.  Now we just need to pull up the existing stretch of the ”road to nowhere” walk.
